Description
Labisia Turtle Back – Rare, Rich, and Seriously Textured
With its deep green, highly textured leaves that look just like a turtle’s shell, the Labisia Turtle Back plant is a rare gem that brings instant character to any houseplant line up. Native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, this slow growing stunner thrives in warmth, moisture, and high humidity – perfect for terrariums, display cabinets, or just the warmest, steamiest corners of your flat.
The leaves aren’t just for show – they’re thick, patterned, and packed with detail that’ll have plant people doing a double take. It’s the kind of plant that doesn’t shout for attention but definitely gets it.
We’ve potted this beauty in our signature ROOTS Sexy Soil – Houseplant Mix, a custom blend designed to keep the moisture steady and the roots happy. And yes – there’s a generous helping of worm castings (aka worm poo) in there for that natural nutrient boost. Plants love it, even if it sounds a bit cheeky.
This one’s best suited to intermediate plant parents who can give it a stable, warm spot and a bit of extra humidity. Keep an eye on watering – don’t let it dry out completely, but don’t soak it either. Basically, it’s all about balance.
Specification
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch its textured leaves, while low light may slow growth. A spot near an east or north facing window is ideal.
Watering
Keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy. Water when the top 2cm of soil feel dry. Reduce watering in winter as growth slows.
Temperature
Thrives in warm conditions (18-26°C). Keep away from cold drafts and radiators, as sudden temperature changes can cause stress.
Humidity
Loves high humidity (60%+). A humidifier, regular misting, or placing it in a terrarium or glass cabinet will keep it happy.
Fertiliser
Feed each time you water spring and summer with a diluted houseplant fertiliser. No need to feed in winter.
Toxicity
Labisia is generally considered non-toxic to pets.
